"The Shy Girl"
Two weeks after acquiring Buster we brought Zena into the fold - again from an Animal Welfare Adoption event. She was an owner surrender rather than a stray but she'd been at the shelter even longer than Buster. Surprisingly, there wasn't any more information available on her other than the owner "didn't have time" for her. Zena is petrified of being in a house and has evidently been an "outside only" dog for all two years of her life. She has been with us for over two weeks now and still won't let us approach her. She's good with other dogs and is a great friend and playmate for Buster. Deb is slowly winning Zena's trust and has been able to pet her slightly but only when Buster is present. We considered returning her (we took her as a "foster" dog) but know in our hearts that she is out of options. Zena is a good dog and rather than expose her to euthanization we'll work with her for however long it takes to earn her trust. If she still won't come inside when Winter arrives, we'll get her a heated dog house so she can at least stay warm. |
