Elmer

2010 - 2012

"Chewboy"

We brought Elmer into the family on February 13, 2012.  He was a rescue dog who looked to have had a very rough start to life.  His face was terribly scarred and his body showed signs of real hunger.  We fell in love with him right away and brought him home from the shelter as soon as possible.  He was a loving dog from the beginning and as gentle as any we'd ever known.  Within a week he blossomed into a dog full of fun and with a real zest for life.  He was an insatiable chewer and a true digging "machine."  Our back fenceline is a testament to his digging abilities and determination.  Within five minutes of plugging his first tunnel into the neighbors' yard he'd completed digging another.

On Friday night, April 6th, he became lethargic and just moped about the house.  He drank lots of water but was uninterested in eating.  This was not "our" dog as he loved to eat and would come to me immediately afterward to burp in my face.  We took him to the vet that following Monday fearing he'd swallowed something that was causing a blockage.  Sadly, that was not the case.  He had a huge cancerous mass in his stomach area along with other things that indicated he would never recover.

Elmer was a great dog who loved life and was taken from us entirely too soon.  In his short time with us he found unconditional love and a bottomless food dish.  The house is quiet now - way too quiet.  We miss him dearly.
